Deputy Director of Community Engagement and Innovation
National Head Start Association
Dr. Deborah Bergeron was the director of the Office of Head Start (OHS) from April 2018 to January 2021. Known as "Dr. B" to her students and staff, she has been a teacher at heart her entire life. She has spent three decades in pre-K–12 public education as a classroom teacher and elementary and high school administrator. In the course of her career, Bergeron also started, grew, and ultimately sold her own educational services company.
Bergeron used her experience as an elementary principal and her background in pre-K–12 instructional leadership to provide unique insights into how Head Start programs support the most vulnerable children in becoming school ready.
Today, she serves as Deputy Director of Community Engagement and Innovation for the National Head Start Association (NHSA), a nonprofit organization committed to the belief that every child, regardless of circumstances at birth, has the ability to succeed in life. NHSA is the voice for more than 1 million children, 245,000 staff, and 1,600 Head Start grantees in the United States. Since 1974, NHSA has worked diligently for policy changes that ensure all at-risk children have access to the Head Start model of support for the whole child, the family and the community.
